How to Prepare Your Device and Data Before Repair

A practical privacy, backup and handover checklist for phones and laptops before a confirmed repair.

Short answer

Back up important files, record the device condition and identifiers, remove unnecessary accessories and sign out of sensitive apps when practical. Use the manufacturer’s repair mode if available. Never share banking passwords, email passwords or one-time codes. Do not erase or hand over the device until the repair option and instructions are confirmed.

Create a current backup

Use the device maker’s supported cloud backup, an encrypted computer backup or another trusted method. Confirm that essential photos, contacts, documents and authentication recovery information are accessible before handover. A backup reduces risk but does not make any repair risk-free.

Reduce unnecessary data access

Remove saved payment cards or sign out of especially sensitive apps when practical. Some devices offer a maintenance or repair mode that limits access while diagnostics run. Ask why access is needed before sharing a screen lock, and change it afterward if you chose to provide one.

  • Never share OTPs, banking PINs or account passwords.
  • Remove SIM and memory cards when instructed.
  • Keep remote-lock and account details available to yourself.

Document the device and handover

Photograph the exterior, note existing marks and list included accessories. Record the model and serial number privately. Confirm the partner identity, collection details, repair scope and return method before handing over the device.

Prepare for post-repair checks

Keep a short list of the original symptoms. After return, check the repaired function, charging, connectivity and included accessories before restoring sensitive accounts. Ask what support terms apply to that specific repair; do not assume a standard warranty.
