How to Identify a Failing Laptop Battery
Common battery warning signs, safe health checks and signs that require immediate shutdown and assessment.
Short runtime, sudden shutdowns, inconsistent charging and operating-system battery warnings can indicate declining battery health. Visible swelling, case separation, unusual heat, smell or leakage are urgent signs: shut down, disconnect power if safe and do not press, puncture or keep charging the battery.
Performance signs
Battery capacity normally reduces with use, but a sharp drop in runtime or sudden shutdown at a reported charge level deserves attention. Compare behaviour across ordinary tasks rather than one unusually heavy workload.
Use built-in health information
Windows, macOS and many manufacturer utilities can report condition, cycle information or estimated full-charge capacity. Treat these as clues, not a complete diagnosis. Software estimates can lag behind physical condition or another charging fault.

Physical warning signs
